Planting A Large Flower Garden? 2 Tips To Keep Your Flowers Healthy

Posted on: 28 January 2022

If you are planting a large flower garden in your yard, this takes a lot of work, as well as spending a lot of money. However, you need to make sure you keep your flowers healthy. Below are two tips on how you can do this.

Use Mulch

One of the most important things you can do for your flower garden is to use mulch. Mulch helps block the sun, which will kill weeds and prevent new weeds from growing. Weeds are hard to control at times and are also bad for flowers. This is because the weeds take up water and nutrients away from the flowers. Mulch can also be beneficial for your flowers because it helps keep them moisturized as the mulch retains water. Put a few inches of mulch on the soil. When you are finished, pull the mulch away from each flower to prevent your flowers from becoming smothered.

You can purchase mulch at a garden center, or there are mulching services that you can hire to do all of this for you. When you are choosing which mulch to use, there are two different types: inorganic and organic. Inorganic mulches include landscape fabrics, rocks, or stones. These things are popular as they last longer than organic mulches because they do not break down as fast. Organic mulches are made of living materials, such as pine needles, shredded bark, compost, wood chips, straw, leaves, and more. These things do break down over time and will have to be replaced each year. When they do break down, they can provide nutrients to the soil.

Use Fertilizer

Fertilizer is also important to keep flowers growing healthy. The type of fertilizer you use and how much you use depends on the type of flowers you have planted. For annual flowers, which do not come back each year, you may not need to fertilize at all. Perennial flowers, which come back each year, do need to be fertilized, however.

There are liquid fertilizers that you can use. These are generally a powder that you mix with water and then put on the flower garden. Another type is slow-release fertilizer. These are granules that you place on the soil. They release fertilizer slowly so you will not have to worry about fertilizing your flowers as much.

Write down the types of flowers you have and take the list to a local garden center. An employee can help you choose the best type of fertilizer for the flowers that you have and give you more information on how to use the fertilizer.
